Cleaning (stamps): Soiled or stained stamps are sometimes cleaned with chemicals or by erasing. The cleaning is usually done to improve the appearance of a stamp.

Cleaning or other impairment that renders a coin less desirable to collectors.
Alteration
A coin that has a date, mintmark, or other feature that has been altered, added, or removed, usually to simulate a rarer issue.

A cleaning chemical used by collectors to counteract the effects of oxidation on stamps printed with ink containing iron. Hydrogen peroxide also can be used to clean slightly yellowed paper.

As for the cleaning, I think I can explain that - it was so messed up on the back with old hinges and traces of gum and all that I gave it a good bath.

Fugitive. An ink intended to prevent cleaning of stamp cancels, which runs when in contact with water or other fluid.

They actually have two boats and spend summer weekends cleaning them, keeping them in repair, and sometimes taking them out for a spin in a nearby lake. With fall approaching, they will be pulling them out of the water and putting them into dry dock.
