Commemoratives. You might never have seen this word before. It refers to stamps that honour or "commemorate" a person or an event. You will see plenty of them as examples in this web-site.
Commemoratives - A stamp issued for a limited period of time, usually at the first-class rate and in a larger format than most stamps. Commemoratives usually honor persons, organizations, events or causes on significant anniversaries.
Commemoratives are often larger and more colorful than definitive stamps. The French 15-franc St. Nicholas by Jean Didier stamp (Scott 657), shown in Figure 2, is a commemorative stamp issued to mark the opening of the French Print Museum.

There are several candidates for the title of first commemorative. A 17-cent stamp issued in 1860 by New Brunswick, showing the Prince of Wales in anticipation of his visit is one possibility.
Regional commemoratives: new USPS stamp issues in certain areas where they are expected to be popular.
Regional issue: USPS new issue available only in locale where first day issue took place.

As an economy measure, the US Post Office overprinted existing definitives in 1928 to create three commemoratives: The Battle of Monmouth Issue (Molly Pitcher), and the two stamps of the Hawaii Sesquicentennial issue.

PICTORIAL: Issued in 1869, these stamps were the first bi-color U.S. stamps and the precursor to modern commemoratives.
PLATE NUMBER STRIP: A strip of three or five coil stamps with the middle stamp bearing a plate number.
Commemorative stamps are usually bigger and more colorfull than the definative stamps. The stamps often honor people or special events. Commemoratives are only available for a short time and only a limited number are printed.

Some collect precancel commemoratives on airmail stamps-although neither is supposed to be precanceled. Others collect all precancels in a particular style of overprint; probably the most popular have been the Double-Line Electros (DLEs).
