*Compound Perforation - two different gauges (sizes) of perforations used on the same stamp. Most frequently one gauge is used for the vertical perforations, and another for the horizontal perforations.
Compound perforations -- This has nothing to do with the condition in which a forensic investigator might find a murder victim. Instead, it refers to a stamp that has a different perf count vertically and horizontally.
Compound perforations are expressed by two numbers, such as "Perf. 12 x 12 1/2." The first number refers to the horizontal perforations at the top and bottom of the stamp. The second number is the gauge of the vertical perforations at both sides.

A stamp that is perf 12.5 x 13.0 is a compound perforation: the top and bottom perforation is 12.5 (ie. 12.5 perforations in 2cm) and the left and right side perforation is 13.0.
