The condition that your stamps are in is crucial to their value. Knowing and understanding the standard terms that stamp collectors and dealers use to describe a stamp's condition is a must in forming a stamp collection.
Condition is a very important factor in determining the value of stamps. This would apply in the swapping of stamps, as in the buying and selling. In the early days of the hobby the reverse was true.

Stamps come to us in different "conditions". Is the stamp torn? Is it dirty? Those are undesirable conditions.
Condition:
The state of a stamp in regard to centering, color freshness, cancellation, and other related characteristics.
Cover: ...
Condition. The overall state of a stamp or cover as it relates to everything from condition of the gum (present or absent), centering, presence or absence of damage to a stamp/cover, etc.
CONDITION: Quality of a stamp regarding its centering, color, and gum.
CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY: Company which held the contract for printing U.S. stamps from 1873 to 1879.
Condition: The appearance and quality of any philatelic material.
Counterfeit: Any philatelic material created as an imitation sold as genuine material.
Cover: An envelope or postal stationery.
Condition: 1. The physical state description of a postage stamp or postal history item offered at auction. 2. Erhaltung [Germany]. 3. Condition [France]. 4. Condizione [Italy]. 5. Condición [Spain].
Condition: The overall appearance and soundness of a stamp or cover. Positive condition factors include fresh full colour, full original gum on unused stamps, and so on.
Condition: The general state of a stamp or a cover. Condition relates to a stamp's centering, gum, perforations, freshness and color.
Condition
A postage stamp's overall state of being. For example, a stamp may be perfectly centered and feature a light cancel, but be in poor condition if it is torn or thinned.
Condition of the Stamp
Any stamp that is clean, not torn, badly creased, or made thin by having a stamp hinge or piece of paper badly torn off the back of the stamp, is said to be in good condition.

A listing of the finest known examples of a particular issue. There is no fixed number of coins in a Condition Census.

Condition - Broadly this refers to what shape the stamp is in and will help in determining a stamp's value. Condition considers questions such as: Is the stamp cancelled? Is it hinged? Does it have any flaws? How well it is centered?

Environmental Conditions
The goal of caring for your treasures does not have to be an overwhelming or all consuming task, particularly if you approach the project in phases.
Tete-beche - a condition created in plate production, either accidentally or intentionally, in which the stamp design is inverted in alternate vertical or horizontal rows.
VF - Stamp condition, "very fine."
VG - Stamp condition, "very good."
Vignette - A stamp design's center which is usually surrounded by a border and, sometimes, includes a gradual shading into the surrounding area.
G: 1: Auction term for "good" condition. 2: Insured Letter; Scott catalog number prefix to identify stamps other than standard postage. 3: Symbol for Guilford Gravure, which appears before the plate number on coil stamps.
The Penny Black is not rare - 68 million of them were printed - but if you had one in excellent condition it could be worth well over £1000.
Imperforate - Never perforated; early stamp sheets were issued in imperf condition, but with modern issues an imperf copy is usually a prized rarity. A single imperforate stamp has edges more or less straight.

Quality is simply another term for Condition, which, to the discerning stamp collector, is paramount.
Catalogue Value: The value of a cover as listed in a given catalogue for the most common condition in which the cover is usually collected. Some catalogues list covers at a retail value.
These stamps are fairly expensive to collect even in used condition. The other stamps in the series are the 1c Marquette on the Mississippi, the 2c Farming in the West (which was swapped with the $2 design), the 5c Fremont on the Rocky Mountains, ...
A word of warning: Don't spoil your fun by becoming a "condition crank." Of course, we all want stamps in fine condition, but many precancels just don't exist that way.

Other shortcomings of this method (and of Methods 2 and 3 as well) are: 1) the most valuable stamps take some expertise in order to be able to identify them properly; 2) the condition of the stamp is a big factor in evaluation of the stamp.
Space Filler: A stamp in poor condition used to fill the designated space in a stamp album until a better copy can be found.
Special Delivery: A service providing expedited delivery of mail. Called Express by some nations.
*Mint - a stamp in the same unused condition in which it came from the post office. Sometimes this term is also applied to unused stamps that have been previously hinged.

I soon discovered that never hinged stamps (those in pristine, post office fresh condition) cost almost twice as much as hinged, but it never mattered to me.
