Curtiss Jenny - the Curtiss-Jenny JN-4 airplane, nicknamed the 'Jenny'. The Jenny was originally manufactured for army training use, but hundreds of surplus Jenny airplanes became available for public use at the end of the First World War.

 


The 24¢ Curtiss Jenny airmail stamp was issued May 13, 1918. Despite not being listed as such, it is actually the world's first airmail special delivery stamp.

Bi-color stamps like our first airmail stamp, the 24¢ Curtiss Jenny stamp of 1918 (Scott C3), were printed in sheets of 100, and had to be printed in two steps, one per color. The guidelines helped align the plate for printing the second color.

Office set a controversial rate of 24 cents for the service, much higher than the 3 cents for first-class mail of the time, and decided to issue a new stamp just for this rate, patriotically printed in red and blue, and depicting a Curtiss Jenny, ...
