U.S. definitives offer collecting challenges

On view (in print) on pages 34-35 of this week's Linn's Stamp News and here online are pictures of the commemorative stamps that the United States Postal Service plans to issue in 2001.
Definitives: These are stamps (often also pre-stamped envelopes-PSEs) issued by the postal authorities for daily use and are printed in large quantities for several years. Usually these stamps are smaller than commemoratives.

Definitives - Used on most mail, generally these are smaller size stamps printed in huge quantities, often in a single color ink, that are available from the post office for an indefinite period of time which may be many years.
Definitives stamp depicting scenery and some occasional fauna and flora became popular since 1890's. It started in New Zealand, Tonga, and Tasmania. It spread thoroughly to Latin America countries.

Above are the values up through 10c in the series of US definitives that was released starting in 1938, and lasting through 1954, when the Liberty Series was begun.

The first tagging in Canada appeared in 1962 on the 1c-5c low-value Wilding definitives. This tagging was called 'Winnipeg tagging' because it was introduced and tested in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
