Throughout most of the past, human beings have primarily counted by tens and by twelves.

Denomination. The face value of a stamp.
Entire. An intact piece of postal stationery (i.e., envelopes on which the stamp has been printed).

Denomination: The face value of a stamp. It is usually printed on the stamp. Modern stamps produced for rate changes sometimes are denominated with a letter. A numerical value is assigned when the letter stamps are issued.

"Short sets" are stamp sets missing a few denominations from being complete, often the higher values. I only buy them if one or two of the high denominations are missing, which typically are the most expensive individual stamps.

Each packet contains 20 or 30 stamps of two or three different denominations. No more than THREE stamps from each packet are required to mail a 39¢ First Class letter. Each packet contains stamps enough for 10 mailings.

In all probability, the first United Nations set will be for regular postage purposes, and will embrace a number of denominations-the exact number unknown.

At that time, the manufacture of regular-issue postage stamps of denominations from lc to 10c was switched to high-speed rotary presses.

Most collectors do not worry too much about the denomination of each stamp. You don't need to keep all the 40 cent stamps together.
