Description
The stamp catalog is the centerpiece of your stamp collecting toolkit.

 


The duplicates from mixtures provide trading material or material for swapping circuits or sales circuits.
If you collect modern used postage stamps, a kiloware mixture might be the best way to acquire such material for your collection.

Facsimile: Duplicates of stamps and covers.
Fake: Stamps that have been altered or repaired to appeal to collectors to appeal to a collector.
Fancy cancel: An unusual attractive postmark.

Trading, once you have a few duplicates or decide to change your direction, is a good method and it puts you in contact with other collectors. Also consider charity.

I purchased a number of year sets (oftentimes, costing $1.00 or less) and as a result, I have many duplicates (most of which are used). My goal is to have more than 2000 stamps by the end of 1997 (not including 1997 stamps).

But just as the name implies, a mixture is a lot of stamps of nondescript determination, many, even most, of which will be duplicates of each other.

As your stamp collection grows, you also acquire plenty of stamp duplicates especially when you buy philatelic mixtures or kiloware. Categorizing postage stamps allows you to keep track of your vast philatelic collection.

Try sorting common definitive duplicates from a variety of countries by color. Look them up in any catalog you have, as it doesn't matter which one you use.

Complementing the albums are the stock books, also available in wide price ranges, for the storing of unmounted material and duplicates, and what are known as "approval cards" used by many collectors for the same purposes.

The collector may have thousands of duplicates, some of which may be very inexpensive while others may have more value.

The stamp newspaper Linn's Stamp News has a regular feature entitled "Kitchen Table Philately", in which the reviewer buys mixtures from various dealers, and analyzes what is in the mixtures, noting percentage of duplicates, oldest and newest stamps, ...

Stock books are also a popular way to store new acquisitions and duplicates, both awaiting further processing - mounting, trade, or sale.

But I will sell my duplicates. I describe them as "Plate Position" and the position # / total positions. The position numbers are assigned from left to right, top to bottom. An example description would be PP1/4.

Sure, you will make mistakes, and sometimes you might even get a great deal for yourself, but remember this is a hobby and if you want to make and keep friends, be up front about your duplicates and what you want to trade for.

These duplicates can help you obtain the stamps you really want through selling or trading with others. Many people sell their stamps online.

The duplicates can be saved for trading.
Sorting is a never-ending job as you will always be adding to your collection. And remember, there is no right or wrong way to collect.

Duplicates: extra copies of stamps that are already in the collection; they should be examined carefully for varieties and variations of color, watermark and perforation.
