Encased Postage - a postage stamp encased in a coin-like container that was treated as if it were a coin with a face value equivalent to that printed on the stamp. Encased postage was used in the Civil War period.

 


Encased: A stamp inserted into a small coin-size case with a transparent front or back. Such stamps were circulated as legal coins during periods when coins were scarce.
