Face: The front of a stamp; the side bearing the design.
Face value: The value of a stamp as inscribed on its face. For letter-denominated or nondenominated stamps, the understood postal value of the stamp.

The face on the stamp is Queen Victoria, who was Queen at that time. Just because a stamp is old doesn't necessarily make it valuable.
A Bisect is a postage stamp cut in half (usually diagonally), and used to pay half its face value, e.g. half a ten cent stamp to pay five. The practice has been permitted (in the US at least) only for special situations (e.g. a shortage of stamps).
Fill a shallow bowl with warm water and place the stamp in the bowl face down. The stamp will sink in a few minutes.

There is one problem that many ink stamps collectors face nowadays, and that is finding the best way to display mint or unused stamps while protecting them at the same time.
Often stamps will be offered at retail prices which are many times the actual face value of the stamps.
"Face" refers to the width of the strokes of the letters, as in "bold-face"; letters with strokes of varying width are called "shaded". Successively narrower letters are referred to as "condensed", "extra- condensed" and "ultra-condensed".

There is no justifiable reason for you to pay more than face value for stamps from Foreign Post Offices or their agents at your local Stamp Show.

If the postcard is a picture of a person, you don't want the postmark to cover the face of the subject, so place the stamp in such a way that the postmark won't cover your subject.
Some countries have sold remainders to the stamp trade at substantial discounts from face value. The countries often mark the stamps in some way, usually with a distinctive cancel.

Place a few drops of special, non-toxic, watermark detector fluid into the detector dish, adding enough to shallowly cover the bottom. The stamp is then placed face-down in the smooth black tray. The watermark should quickly become visible.
