Fancy cancels
Many of the 19th century stamp cancels were produced locally by postmasters before cancels were standardized by the Post Office.

Fancy cancel: "A general term to describe any pictorial or otherwise unusual obliterating postmark.

Fancy Cancel - a cancel that is pictorial or geometric in nature, produced by a local post office.

Fancy cancel: An unusual attractive postmark.
Fast colours: Inks that are resistant to fading.
Field Post Office: A military postal service operating in forward areas.

Fancy Cancel - Any pictorial or unusual obliterating postmark.
Fantail Margin - Missing marginal perforations from edge of stamp to the end of the sheet.
Fast Colors - Fade-resistant inks.

Fancy Cancel
Any obliteration that has been created in a decorative fashion to cancel a stamp.

FANCY CANCEL - A cancellation which is or includes a design.
FILLER - A stiff piece of paper or cardboard found inside a First Day Cover. It provides necessary stiffness for a clearer cancellation.

WATERBURY FANCY CANCELS
John W. Hill, the postmaster at Waterbury, Connecticut from 1869 to 1886, was especially imaginative and skilled at creating his cancels, and good examples like the ones above sell for hundreds, even thousands of dollars.

Fancy Cancel - A cancellation which is or includes a design.
Faults - Factors that can decrease the value of a stamp. Factors include thin spots, creases, short or torn perforations, missing pieces, tears, or stains.

Cancellations covered range from carven corks and target killers to privately manufactured fancy cancels to combination postmarks of the early machine cancel era to handstamps for third and fourth class mail.
