First-class mail with a numbered receipt, including a valuation of the registered item, for full or limited compensation if the mail is lost. Some countries have issued registered mail stamps.

Presorted First-Class Mail - A nonautomation category for a mailing that consists of at least 500 addressed mailpieces and is sorted and prepared according to USPS standards. This mail may bear a barcode.

In most countries, when a first-class mailpiece is undeliverable as addressed, it is returned or forwarded.

The Canadian and American NVI programs are essentially equivalent, as both cover regular domestic first-class mail.

Certified mail stamp - a stamp paying for proof of delivery of first-class mail for which no indemnity value is claimed. Using this is a less expensive, less secure alternative to registered mail.

Constitution (Art. 1, Sec. 8) Congress vested in the Post Office Department an absolute monopoly for the transportation of first-class mail.
