Stamp collectors often wait for a postage stamp’s first day of issue. They often make it a point that the new postage stamps corresponds to the date on the cancellation when they send it.

First Day Cover - an envelope on which a stamp is placed and cancelled on the first day of issue of that stamp. Typically a cachet is applied to the left side of the envelope describing the stamp's issue.

Frame: The outer portion of a stamp design, often consisting of a line or a group of panels.

Most stamps issued by the USPS are announced several months in advance, with a specific issue date and city or town of release.

First Day Cover: A cover bearing a stamp tied by a cancellation showing the date of the first day of issue of that stamp.

A cover canceled with the official first day of issue date. The cancellation process is usually done away from the first day site, except for those at the ceremony. A 30 day time extension is usually granted to get covers canceled.

First Day Of Issue (FDI) - The day on which a stamp is first placed on sale.
Fiscal - A revenue stamp or similar label use to show proof that a tax has been paid.
FL - Abbreviation, folded letter.

First day cover collecting, as such, can be attributed to the true scarcity of early U.S. stamps used on the date of issue.

FIRST DAY COVER (FDC) - An envelope bearing the cancellation date representing the first day of issue of the stamp. It is usually mailed from the station where the stamp was first put into circulation.

Filler - A stiff piece of paper or cardboard found inside a First Day Cover. It provides necessary stiffness for a clearer cancellation. It also provides protection to help prevent the bending of the cover as it travels through the mail.

These generally accompany a first day of issue of new stamps. Another way of describing them is … ‘a picture postcard with the vignette of the stamp as the main design’.

If it is a first day of issue, then follow the instructions that you would usually follow for FDIs. However, often it will not be an FDI. In those cases, I enclose a letter to the Postmaster.

Stamps Sold Before the First Day of Issue
At times, post offices have been known to sell stamps before the official date of issue. When this occurs it is noted, but the date of issue remains the first day of issue.

Cachet: A seal usually used in First Day Covers.
Cancelled-to-order: stamps that care pre-cancelled governments.
Cancel: A mark showing that the stamp is used.
