Only a small fraction of philatelists collect covers. But you can easily find them in stamp collecting stores. You can also buy them online. 2-Clicks has a directory of US first day cover dealers.
How to store philatelic covers?

First Day Cover - an envelope on which a stamp is placed and cancelled on the first day of issue of that stamp. Typically a cachet is applied to the left side of the envelope describing the stamp's issue.

FIRST DAY COVER: Envelope with stamp canceled on the first day of issue. Most covers from 1935 on are cacheted. Cachets are designs which relate to the topic of the stamp being issued.

First Day Cover (FDC): A cover bearing a stamp or stamps tied by a cancellation showing the date of the official first day of issue of that stamp or stamps.

First Day Cover
A cover canceled with the official first day of issue date. The cancellation process is usually done away from the first day site, except for those at the ceremony. A 30 day time extension is usually granted to get covers canceled.

*First Day Cover - a cover cancelled on the day a stamp is issued, in the city in which it is released.

First day cover collecting, as such, can be attributed to the true scarcity of early U.S. stamps used on the date of issue.

The first day of issue is the day on which a postage stamp, postal card or stamped envelope is put on sale, within the country or territory of the stamp-issuing authority.

FIRST DAY COVER (FDC) - An envelope bearing the cancellation date representing the first day of issue of the stamp. It is usually mailed from the station where the stamp was first put into circulation.

First day cover (FDC):
Pictorial envelope with related stamps (gummed or self-adhesive) or a mini-sheet postmarked on the first day of issue. It is valued for postage only on the day of issue, from the post office named on the postmark.

Filler - A stiff piece of paper or cardboard found inside a First Day Cover. It provides necessary stiffness for a clearer cancellation. It also provides protection to help prevent the bending of the cover as it travels through the mail.
