Flag Cancel - a cancel (generally a machine cancel) that features a flag as part of its design. Flag cancels were common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most of them produced by American Postal Machine Co. machines.

 


Flag Cancel - Any postage cancellation design that has a flag shape.
Flappers - Typically appearing on British stamps, refers to a wider than normal, side stamp border.

THAT FLAG DOESN'T LOOK QUITE RIGHT
The 50 state flags issue of 1976 was quite popular. But the 13¢ Iowa state flag (on the right) is incorrect. The white stripe in the center should be 50% of the width, not 33-1/3%.

Picture B shows a "Flag Cancel", so if you said B-3, you were right again! This was easy, even though you might never have heard of 'flag cancels' before. The cancellation mark on the stamp shows a Royal Flag of some kind.

In the example above, which is a closeup of a strip of 1996 "flag over porch" self-adhesive stamps, we can see a plate number comprising five digits, one for each color layer.
