Crude, handmade paper produced locally, as opposed to finer, machine-made paper.
Never Hinged:
A stamp without hinge marks. Usually a never-hinged stamp has original gum, but this is not always the case.

 


Papir, Håndgjort: (Dan.) handmade paper.
Papir, Hårdt: (Dan.) hard paper.
Papir, Hladky: (Czech.) plain paper, smooth paper.
Papir, Hvit: (Nor.) white paper.
Papir, Karton: (Dan.) carton paper, thick paper.

Hand colored - A printed, handdrawn or handmade cachet to which hand painting or hand coloring has been added.
Hand Drawn - A cachet applied to a cover by hand with pen, pencil, brush, chalk or other art media.

With handmade paper, the furnish is stored in a vat and the craftsman uses a mould to strain out enough material to form a sheet of paper.

On handmade paper, a watermark is formed when a design is created in wire and affixed to the screen upon which the paper pulp is gathered. This leaves a slight thinning of the paper where the wires are in the screen, forming a pattern.

Native Paper - Crude, locally-produced, handmade paper.
Negative Postmark - A postmark with its words formed by the un-inked portion of its design.
Never Hinged (NH) - A stamp without hinge marks.
