The heavy cancellation on the U.S. 2¢ deep-rose Washington stamp pictured in Figure 1 obscures the characteristics that differentiate between the types of the large and complex 2¢ red Washington stamp family.
Oblitération lourdé: (Fr.) heavy cancellation. Oblitération rond avec date: (Fr.) circular date stamp. Obliterator: hand or machine stamp used to cancel an adhesive. Obliterazione: (It.) obliteration.
- a killer is a dark, heavy cancellation. In the early days of U.S. stamps the killer was a very dark heavy blotch that often obscured the stamp entirely. Modern (machine) cancellations are usually a set of bars.
- Average grade (A) means that the stamp design may be slightly cut by one or two sides and outside margins may show on the perf teeth and also has heavy cancellation marks.
Heavy cancel - Obliteration which, either by its design or overinking, spoils the appearance of the adhesive stamp by covering most of its surface. Highway Post Office - The Post Office sorted mail on special motor vehicles in transit between cities.
