Hinging

Philately HingesHorse Racing

Hinging. Hinging was the normal practice with stamp collectors up until about 1960.

GUM - Hinging - Gum Condition
It surprises many people initially when they learn that the condition of the gum on a stamp affects its value to a collector, but it's true.

Hinging or otherwise marring the gum of these stamps would detract from their theoretical value.

The hinging referred to in these terms is mounting of the stamp in a stamp album by the application of a stamp hinge to the back of the stamp. The highest grade is unmounted mint or mint never hinged.

Factors include color, selvage, plate or die variations, unusual cancels, faults, hinging, gum, and markings.
