Occasionally we come across something in the library archive that doesn't quite fit neatly into a box (physically or metaphorically) and, unfortunately, was not labeled for posterity.

 


The item on the right, from a friend, qualifed for the basic 32¢ first-class rate, but has twice that amount.

The item shown in Figure 2 is something else entirely. Inscribed "Souvenir of the London International Stamp Exhibition," it depicts postage stamp designs.

Any item printed directly from a die. Typically, collectors refer to such items as die proofs, but the term really is not accurate for items printed from the original die long after the stamps were printed, because there is nothing left to be "proven.

A numismatic item that unintentionally varies from the norm. Overdates and overmintmarks are not considered errors since they were done intentionally. Other die-cutting "mistakes" are considered errors.

Counterfeit - an item, usually a replica of an existing stamp, made to defraud collectors. The term can also be applied to overprints, postmarks, etc.

FORGERY- [1] Postal item fraudulently manufactured with intent to deceive either the post office (postal forgery) or collectors (fake). [2] A fraudulently produced or altered philatelic item intended to deceive the collector.

Marking on a postal item recording the date and/or origin of its transit through the mail system.
Precancel
Stamp canceled by the post office before it is sold.

Stamp or stationery item distributed to UPU members for identification purposes and to the philatelic press and trade for publicity purposes.

Cachet - Special handstamp (often a 'rubber stamp'), manuscript note, adhesive label or printed design borne by a postal item and confirming unusually a particular route or an interesting usage; e.g. a first flight on a particular route.

Air Mail Letters packets or any other postal item that is delivered by air transport. Some countries issues special stamps and covers with printed stamps for such mail but most allows the use of normal stamps.
