Letterpress - a process of printing which is the exact opposite of intaglio, that is, the inked portion of the plate is raised above the surface of the plate, as opposed to be being recessed below it.

Originally a Printing Press, but now applied to the process of Letterpress, including all forms of relief printing. This encompasses old style block printing, presses with moveable type and flexography.

Letterpress printing is relief printing, or the opposite of recess printing. Rather than the ink being held in a recessed design in the plate, only the raised part of the plate is inked. This is how an ordinary rubber handstamp works.

However it is now considered that there were two different printings - letterpress and offset - with the microscopically clearer printing being from the letterpress, those from the offset originally being thought of as the counterfeit.

For many years Pemara only produced self-adhesive definitive stamps using the letterpress process (typography), but since 1998 uses lithography for its self-adhesives.

Printing - the four printing methods most commonly used for the production of postage stamps are: line-engraving (widely referred to as recess-printing); typography (letterpress); photogravure; and lithography.

Leader Strip - The unprinted beginning of a coil strip.
Letterpress - Prints made directly from an inked plate having a raised surface.

Typography - printing method done by pressure, the ink lines being impressed into the paper so that they appear raised on the back of the stamp. This is also referred to as 'letterpress' or 'relief' printing.
