A lightly hinged stamp might show just the faint outline of where the flap of the hinge was once attached. A heavily hinged stamp might have been hinged two or more times and show evidence of extensive gum disturbance from the process.

LH means "Mint, Lightly Hinged", and is often indicated (in auction catalogs, for instance) by a single asterisk (*).

Buying online creates a problem, as it isn't unusual for the seller to mention whether the stamp is hinged or never hinged, though it is less frequently that a picture is provided to show if the stamp is lightly hinged, has hinged remnants, ...

- Hinged, a stamp where traces of the hinged mount remained; it can either be lightly hinged or heavily hinged.
- Thinned, a stamp where the gum was removed including some of the paper.

All stamps are MINT, NH, F+ - XF. A very few are only Fine (F) or are lightly hinged (LH).
