Love stamps: small pieces of paper can convey big emotions

In 1967 when the Beatles sang "All You Need is Love," some of the world's postal administrations heeded the advice and began issuing love stamps.

 


Love stamps are designed around a love theme. In the United States, they were first issued in 1973. Generally timed to appear before Valentine's Day, they are also used on wedding invitations throughout the year.

Stamp collectors love firsts! Doesn't everybody? We all seem to have a fascination with the first of anything, whether it's the first flower of spring or winning first place in a contest. "Star light, Star bright, First star I see tonight.

"Phil" is a prefix that connotes attraction or love, hence a philosopher is a "lover of truth" and an Anglophile is a "lover of all things English".

Do you love movies or rock and roll? Stars of both can be found on stamps. Are you a sports fan? You can probably find your favorite sport on stamps as well.

In one instance, a medical man with a real love for stamps, put wonderful specimens in the margins of a printed album, simply because he didn't know what else to do with them. He hadn't thought of an unhinged sheet and typewriter.

Stamp clubs hold Stamp Competitions and Exhibitions and club members love to show off their stamp collections at these events.

Special stamps are the extra stamps the post office prints each year. The Love stamps and the Christmas stamps are special stamps.

There were exhibits of Israeli stamps and revenue stamps and Brazilian stamps and stamps of sword fights. There was an exhibit by a girl of dozens of different Love stamps and postmarks.
