Gap: unprinted space between the ends of two printed precanceling lines, indicating the seam between the mat; if the gap falls on the joint line, it is known as a ‘line gap.' plates.

Paper has as its chief component, a mat of cellulose fibers. Cellulose is the skeleton structure of plant cells and can be separated from the plant for use in paper.

Granite - paper containing countless very short hairs (fibres) of colour(s) contrasting with the main mat of the paper as a security against forgery.

Many advanced collectors first mount their stamps on a mat and then mount the mat in their album. This method allows the stamp to be removed as often as desired without damage for it is permanently mounted on the mat.

I priced wooden frames at a local discount store and found I could buy a 5-inch-by-7-inch or an 8-inch-by-10-inch frame with glass and a double mat for less than $5.
If I attach a few stamps within the mat, it makes a very attractive presentation.
