NH means "Mint, Never Hinged", and is often indicated (in auction catalogs, for instance) by a pair of asterisks (**). It means the stamp is unused, and its gum has absolutely no disturbance of any sort. Post Office fresh.

That may sound odd to the neophyte collector, but respected catalogs have two prices for stamps: the low price for hinged and the high price for never hinged.
Never hinged stamps prior to that are from collectors who put stamps in glassines but never got around to hinging them in their albums, or from unsold dealers stock in glassines or stockbooks.
It really is quite inexpensive to build an impressive collection of United States stamps from about 1930-1970 (Mint, never hinged).
I never thought about "never hinged stamps," as I hinged everything. It didn't make much difference to me because I knew I didn't have anything of value. I collected stamps for perhaps a couple years and then put them away because of other interests.
