Obsolete Stamps which are not available for sale through the post office, though continuing to be valid for postage. Stamps which are no longer valid are declared to be ‘invalidated' or ‘demonetized'.

 


Obsolete
Stamps no longer on regular sale at post offices, but usually still valid for postal use.
An inscription printed on a stamp after manufacture, often to commemorate an event or anniversary or a stamp exhibition.

Obsolete: A stamp which is no longer available in post offices.
Occupation issue: A stamp released for use in occupied territory
Official: Stamp or stationery which are issued solely for official use.

Obsolete: A stamp no longer available from post offices, although possibly still postally valid.
Occupation Issue: An issue released for use in territory occupied by a foreign power.

Obsolete - A stamp which may be used for postage but is unavailable from any post office.
Occupation Issue - An issue released and used in a foreign-occupied territory.

Demonetised - No longer legal tender; in particular, a postage stamp bearing a duty in an obsolete system of currency, or of an issue stated by the postal authority to be no longer valid for postage.

Purchasing Department - members wishing to use this service paid for the purchasing agent to procure new issues or obsolete stamps at or near face value. The more members that participated the better prices they could buy for.

Remainders: Stocks of stamps remaining unsold at the time that an issue is declared obsolete by a post office. Some countries have sold remainders to the stamp trade at substantial discounts from face value.

Some claim that stamps may even become obsolete as electronic communication eclipses the postal -- that the hobby itself is dying. But in truth, signs are pointing to health and even growth for our hobby.

This Yugoslav stamps was overprinted even before it was issued - a change in postage rates made its original value obsolete.

The service essentially became obsolete when the Post Office Department decided to reorganize its mail handling/distribution system by adopting the sectional center concept (see ZIP Code).
