Off-Center: A stamp design is not centered in relation to the edges of the stamp. Generally, off-center stamps are less desirable than stamps more nearly centered in relation to the edges.

"Good" stamps are those which are off-center, but fairly attractive. There may be minor defects such as disturbed gum, thin areas, heavy hinge marks.
Off-center stamps, or those heavily canceled, faded or stained, are usually sold at large discounts, it is noted, while damaged stamps are not desired. There are exceptions, of course.
The stamp above is noticeably off-center. Two sides have wider margins than the other two. Notice that the top and left sides nearly touch the design of the stamp but do not cut into the design of the stamp.
The off-center 8¢ stamp shown here pictures the 5¢ stamp as a three-margin example. A fun, inexpensive collection would use this stamp-on-stamp to illustrate the concept of centering within the context of stamp collecting.
- Fine to very fine grade (F-VF) means that the stamp design is slightly off-centered either horizontally or vertically and the design is clear from perforations.
Interestingly, however, there are instances where extreme or visually appealing variations from the ideal, such as some part of a design's being radically off-center, can make a stamp more valuable than one that is perfect, e.g.
FREAK: A stamp showing a production flaw which is not consistent - includes ink smudge and off-center perforations.
But there are also off-center collectors who will be happy to pick up your bulk lots in hopes of a "find.
Stamps with nearly perfect centering (superb) frequently sell for multiples of catalog value, while those that are quite off-center (but not misperforated) sell for far less than catalog value.
