Optical Character Reader - postal equipment that "reads" the address on an envelope. Sometimes this term is also used for the entire system, including the device that sprays the address on the envelope as a bar code.

 


optical character reader (OCR)—An automated mail sorting machine that interprets the address information on a letter-size mailpiece and sprays the corresponding ZIP Code information onto the piece as a barcode.

OCR - an acronym for 'Optical Character Reader'. In the Postal Service, Optical Character Readers are used to read mail addresses and spray corresponding bar codes onto the envelopes for processing.

OCR - acronym for Optical Character Reader equipment, capable of reading the postal code. Was first installed in Ottawa on January 4, 1972.
