Overprints are created for various reason. One - the most common one - is simple economy - it's cheaper to add text on top of an existing stamp than to print totally new ones. Another is the need for a new stamp quickly.

Overprint: Any printing over the original completed design of a stamp. An overprint that changes the value of a stamp is also called a surcharge.

Overprint. Any printing over the original design of a stamp. For instance, an overprint that upgrades or changes the value of a stamp.
Pair. Two unseparated stamps.

Overprint: Printing added on top of the original design of a stamp, or … any printing over the original design of a stamp. Often used in Australia to commemorate a special event, such as an overseas philatelic exhibition.

*Overprint - printing placed on top of a stamp's face for some special purpose. Overprints have been used for precancelling, service inscription, surcharging, commemorative and security purposes, and on AMGs.

Overprints - words or devices printed on a stamp after it was completed.

Overprint - An additional printing on a stamp that was not part of the original design -- such as additional words or symbols or even a new value.

Overprints may also be inverted. Many of these are common, since the expedient nature of many overprints means that the production process is not so carefully controlled.

An overprint which alters or restates the face value or denomination of the stamp to which it is applied.
Unused:
A stamp with or without gum which has no cancellation or other evidence of postal duty.

Stamps overprinted with these words were used by H M Admiralty dockyards and other installations on official mail.

Usually overprinted or surcharged stamps with the country name, or currency, or both, of another country in which the satellite post office is located.

The practice of overprinting officials, first with the initials O.H.M.S., and then by the single letter "G," began in 1949.

Surcharge: An overprint that changes or restates the denomination of a stamp or postal stationery item.

Backprint - An 'overprint' applied to the back of a stamp.
Backstamp - A handstamp applied to the back of a letter, usually indicating date of transit or receipt at the office of destination.

Stamps overprinted with a city and state before being used. These stamps were used by bulk mailers and required a special license from the Post Office. The post office saved time and trouble by eliminating this mail from the normal cancelling process.

In other words, all overprints showing the name of the city and state PRINTED in deep black printers' ink are precancels.

Service overprint - Postage stamp overprinted (with the word 'service' or the initials of a military force) for exclusive use by military personnel, often outside the country of issue.

Stamp with a special cancellation, overprint or text allowing it to bypass normal canceling. The indication of stamps being precancels is applied by a post office before the stamps are sold.

Specimens are overprinted or punched with the word "SPECIMEN" or its equivalent, or are overprinted or punched in a way to make them different than the issued stamps. Specimens of scarce stamps tend to be less valuable than the actual stamps.

By eliminating all errors of color or cliche, overprints, surcharges and provisionals of every description, there are just under a hundred major varieties, including papers and shades, throughout the world that list at $1,000 and over.

CHARITY STAMPS - are stamps with a surcharge on them which goes for a cause. The OVERPRINTED - refugee relief is printed later on the stamp has been used for the cause of refugee relief in India.

Some proofs were made in other colours, to demonstrate what those colours would look like. These are called Trial Colour proofs. Many of the proofs, of all colours, were overprinted with the word 'specimen', displayed horizontally, vertically, ...

Strictly speaking, the implement used to apply a postmark by hand, but often used loosely to signify the postmark itself. Historically, some overprints were applied by means of handstamps.
