Packet Letter - a letter carried by a ship operating on a regular schedule and under contract to the Post Office. PAID - a marking applied to a stampless letter to indicate that postage had been paid in cash.
Packet letter - Early letter conveyed by packet with special handstamp, usually for an additional fee. See Ship Letter handstamp applied to letters arriving by Packet.
Packet letter: mail carried by a ship under contract by a post office to carry mail, started 1840s. Packet postage: that portion of the rate used to pay the ship that carried the item.
Paquebot refers both to a mail-carrying boat and to the postal markings on ship-carried mail. Such markings include the actual word, paquebot, packet letter, paquete ship letter or something similar.
