Perforation - denotes, in philately, a series or row of round or other shaped holes, punched out between rows of stamps in a sheet (or coil) of stamps to facilitate partition, separation, or division.

Perfin stamps in Canada were either officially issued by the government or by private firms.
Each Canadian province had a perfin with its initials. However, the introduction of postal meters replaced the use of perfin postal stamps.
perfins - What an odd name! What it means is that there are perforations "in" the stamp that usually spell out a word or some initials. For example, stamps used by the Government of Canada once had the initials O.H.M.S. punched into the stamp.
PERFINs are stamps which have been punched with small pins to form a design or a company's initials. This helped companies make the stamps easier to trace which cut down on employee pilfering of the company's postage stamps for personal use.

That last cover does have a nice perfin on it though, with the company's initials - MPCo. And what was the significance of the image (presumably the company's logo), a squat, funny-looking guy with wings, a torch, and an oil can?
Precancellation of stamps of this country was effected by means of oversized holed perfins. Little is known other than stamps defaced in this fashion often received additional cancellations at the office of destination.
