Permit: Franking by the imprint of a number and additional information that identifies a mailer's prepaid postage account, thereby eliminating the need to affix and cancel stamps on large mailings.

 


Permit Imprint - Printed indicia, instead of an adhesive postage stamp or meter stamp that shows postage prepayment by an authorized mailer.

Permit Mail Indicium - an imprint in the upper right hand corner of a cover indicating the authority, under permit, of a mailer to make large (bulk) mailings at a special (quantity) rate.

permit—Any authorization required for specific types of preparation or postage payment. Specifically, an authorization to mail without postage affixed by using indicia or an imprint.

Permit: Procedure used by businesses or post offices that imprints mailer's assigned permit number and an indication of the prepaid postage on each piece of mail. This eliminates the need to affix and cancel stamps on large mailings.

Paid Permits: Oct. 1, 1904; a system for mailing identical pieces in quantity without stamps.

Only one country is permitted to issue postage stamps without including their name. This is Great Britain because it was the first country to issue postage stamps in 1840.

This might include air mail, special delivery, semi-official, official, postage due, local issues, stamped envelopes, post cards, hunting permit stamps, essays, and revenue stamps.

The practice has been permitted (in the US at least) only for special situations (e.g. a shortage of stamps). The most recent of them was over 60 years ago, so genuine bisects are usually rare and valuable. There are even trisects! ...

Local precancels still do have city names between two lines. Users had to obtain a permit, so that the post office could keep a lid on re-use of precancels. It was against regulations for the permit-holder to sell mint precancels to anyone else.
