A Plate Number Coil (abbreviated PNC) is a coil stamp with a plate number on it, usually at the bottom of the stamp, below the design. Every printing plate for stamps has such a number assigned to it.

Plate Number: Numerals or an alphanumeric combination that identifies the printing plate used to print postage stamp images. Plate numbers on sheet stamps often appear in corner margin paper or side margin paper.

Until 1958 in Canada, selvedge was used mainly to carry inscriptions bearing plate numbers and names of printing companies. Warning information concerning the authorized use was also printed on the selvedge of panes containing precancelled stamps.

Some stamp production methods, like booklet production, normally cut off plate numbers. In the United States, plate number blocks are collected normally as blocks of four to 20 stamps, depending on the press used to print the stamps.
