Plate block - four or more stamps to which are attached the marginal paper bearing the printing plate or cylinder number inscription.

 


Plate number block: A block of stamps from the corner or side of a pane including the selvage bearing the number(s) of the plate(s) used to print the sheet from which the pane was separated.

Plate Number Single - an individual stamp, mint or used, with a plate number attached.

Plate Number Block - Same as plate block, but it includes the number(s) of the plate(s) used to print the sheet.
Plating - Reconstructing a pane by collecting units of stamps representing various positions.

In late October 2005 the unique plate number block of four stamps was purchased by a then anonymous buyer for $2,970,000. The purchaser was revealed to be U.S. financier Bill Gross.

The series comprises United States commemorative stamps in singles, blocks of 4 and plate number blocks. U. S. regular issues as well as albums for special groups of stamps including, U. S.

Plate number blocks are collected normally as blocks of four to 20 stamps, depending on the press used to print the stamps. When each stamp in a pane is a different design, the entire pane is collected as the plate block.
