Plating is a surface covering in which a metal is deposited on a conductive surface. Plating has been done for hundreds of years, but it is also critical for modern technology.

A positive image of plastic is made using the original steel plate (relief image), which is subsequently transferred as a negative image onto copper in an electroplating bath (incised image).
This was intended as a security and accounting device, but did not last long, since it made it necessary to engrave at least part of each position in the sheet separately. It has been a great help to collectors in plating the issue, however.
