Postal history is the study of postal systems and how they operate and, or, the collecting of covers and associated material illustrating historical episodes of postal systems.

There are references to a postal system in existence among the Egyptians during 2000 BC ! The first use of a postal system in China was under the Chou dynasty (c. 1111-255 BC).

Postal history can include anything and everything relating to a postal service and the delivery of mail.
The first thing that comes to the mind when we hear the term "postal history" is probably the word "covers." ...

The United States Postal Service provides a wealth of resources, reaching back to its roots in colonial America, for those interested in its history.

Postal History
A term used to describe covers of the pre-stamp era, ie before 1840. Also used for post-1840 covers of particular interest - unusual postmarks, scarce postal rates, etc. A somewhat misleading term.

Postal History: The study of postal markings, rates and routes, or anything to do with the history of the posts.

Postal history: The study of historical postal markings, rates and routes.
Postal stationery: Anything excluding postage stamps used in the postal system including covers, postcards etc.
Postmark: Official postal marking.

*Postal History - the study and collection of covers that chronicle the movement of the mails. Desirable covers will have significant postal markings, rates, routes, usages, origins and destinations.

Postal history concentrates on the use of stamps on mail. It includes the study of postmarks, post offices, and the process by which letters are moved from sender to recipient, including routes and choice of conveyance.

To postal history specialists, a commercial cover is far more desirable than one that originated philatelically. A commercial cover is one that traveled through the mail for business purposes, such as to carry a gas bill or subscription payment.

Having begun its postal history with the three penny Beaver, it is perhaps fitting for Canada to commemorate the Millennium with the wild animals definitive series, all of which should be released by 2000.

Collectors who enjoy postal history always want the stamp with its envelope, which is one reason why you should not be quick to soak stamps off their covers. If you find an old hoard of envelopes, get some advice before you take the stamps off! ...
