Proofs differ from essays in that they have the same design as the finished stamp.
Proofs - trial impressions, or 'progress' prints, classified as follows:
engraver's progress and final prints.
die proofs taken from an engraved die just completed, before duplicating it on to a plate or stone.
PROOF: Preliminary printing of a stamp to test color, design, etc. Unlike an essay, proof designs are used on the finished stamps.

Proofs: Trial impressions from a die or printing plate before actual stamp production. Proofs are made to examine a die or plate for defects and to compare the results of different inks.
*Proof - an impression printed (pulled) directly from a die or a plate, usually done before production of stamps begins. A proof is made to "prove" (approve) the engraving of the die, or the transfer to the plate.
Proof
The term Proof denotes a method of manufacture, not a grade. Proof coins are made with special care, exclusively for collectors or investors and not struck for general circulation.
Die Proofs They are normally printed in black, from the engraver's completed die, and submitted for official approval.

A national society with local chapters at New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Tulsa. Holds annual convention and meetings of the chapters each month.
