Repaired stamp - a damaged stamp that has been repaired in some way to reinforce it or to make it resemble an undamaged stamp.

I agree not knowingly to sell, trade, produce, or advertise repaired, altered, or otherwise modified philatelic items unless that condition is clearly stated.

Second is look closely for repair of stamps. Common stamp repairs include cleaning stains, replacing torn pieces, sealing holes and tears, smoothing creases and repairing thins.

In a broad sense, fakes include repairs, reperforations (altered or faked perforations) and regummed stamps (on which adhesive has been applied to the back to make a stamp appear to have full, undisturbed gum).

Watch out for stamps with hinge remnants and/or heavily disturbed gum, as these can conceal much more serious defects such as tears, thins, repairs, etc.

Printers sometimes tried to repair them by impressing them with the original die. If this was not done accurately, double or more lines would result in the printed stamps. These are called re-entries.

Once objects have been damaged, they are altered forever. A conservator can stabilize and repair the piece, but its visual appearance will suffer . . . as will the owner's purse when the conservator's fee is paid.

Fake: A stamp, cover or cancel that has been altered or concocted to appeal to a collector. In a broad sense, fakes include repairs, reperforations and regummed stamps, as well as painted-in cancels, bogus cancels or counterfeit markings.

A taped joint connecting two pieces of a roll of stamp paper while still on the press. Used to repair broken webs or extend the length of a given roll. Splices, which are normally red or clear adhesive tape, can be found with printing on them.

In a negative sense, the surfaces on repaired or altered coins may be burnished by mechanical or chemical methods. For example, a high-speed drill with a wire brush attachment is used to achieve this effect.

Repair - A corrected flaw in typographed or line-engraved printing.
