Philately ReversedRibbed Paper

RFD - see Rural Free Delivery.
Ribbed Paper - paper with corrugated appearance of fine parallel ridges, similar to laid paper, but with a more dramatic appearance. Example: The 1¢ Franklin of 1873 (Scott 156).

 


RFD: Rural Free Delivery. System for free home delivery of mail in rural areas of the United States, begun just prior to the turn of the 20th century.

RFD - See "Rural Free Delivery."
Ribbed - Paper which shows parallel ridges on at least one side of a stamp.
Ribbed Frame - Varieties of encased postage with fine parallel lines on the silver side of the metal case.

Rural free delivery service began in 1896. Prior to this time, people living in the country had to pick up their mail at the post office in town. The RFD system was made permanent in 1902.

Rural Free Delivery (RFD): begun Oct. 1,1896, brought daily mail delivery to residents living outside urban areas.
