Rouletted

Philately Rotary plateRouletting

A rouletted revenue stamp, US 1898
Rouletting uses small cuts in the paper instead of holes. It was used by a number of countries, but is rarely if ever seen on modern stamps.

In January of 1915, such authorization was indeed given, but only to sell the remaining stock of the rouletted stamps.

Sometimes it's hard to tell a rouletted, perforated stamp from a regularly imperforate one. It's best to have such stamps in pairs that have not yet been separated. They will look like imperforates, but the scoring will be clearly visible.

Most self-adhesive booklets contain either ten or twenty stamps, which are rouletted, and allow the booklet to be folded up. Unfolded booklets are sent to post offices in chequebooks of 20 stamps.

Imperforate - the lack of some separation device between stamps such as perforation holes or rouletted slits that allow for easy tearing. Imperforate stamps have to be cut apart by scissors or blades.
