Special stamps proliferate in stamp programs

Broadly speaking, regular postage stamps can be divided into three categories: definitives, commemoratives and special stamps.

 


Special stamps are the extra stamps the post office prints each year. The Love stamps and the Christmas stamps are special stamps.

Special stamps: Non-regular stamps issued on special occasions.
Specimen: Material which is used to identify philatelic material which is approved by the government.
Speculative issue: A stamp issued solely for collective purposes.

Special Stamps: Regular postage stamp issues that fall outside the traditional definitions of commemorative and definitive stamps.

Special stamps
Special stamps are ones that fit into none of the other categories(!) They aren't quite definitives, they're not commemoratives, and they are not service-specific stamps.

Special stamps
Holiday stamps are postage stamps that are made during special occasions every year. Examples of these stamps are Love stamps during Valentines and the Christmas stamps every Yuletide season.

A stamp imperforate on one or more sides, but with at least one side perforated.

23-1945: special stamps issued under Japanese occupation, 1944: stamps issued for government of Nanking, 1994: stamps surcharged for North China.

Our Post Office does take cognizance of these affairs by issuing special stamps to commemorate the event. Proceeds from the sale of these, goes to the Post Office. The sale of these has run to a total as high as one million dollars on occasion.

Postage due stamps are special stamps applied by a post office to mail with insufficient postage.
Revenue stamps - stamps issued to pay taxes.

The so-called straight postage stamp, in addition to its use for regular mail, will carry a letter as well via airmail, or by special delivery, or parcel post, even though special stamps may have been produced for these purposes.

PASTE-UP PAIR: A pair of coil stamps which shows the joint where two sheets were pasted together.
