For instance, 19th century mail delivery often relied on a mix of private ships, steamboats, stagecoaches, railroads, and other transportation organizations to transport mail.

 


In the 19th century, small towns sprang up at crossroads and along stagecoach routes. In my home state of Ohio, the building of canals and, later, railroads created new towns and villages to serve travelers and handle freight.

" Letters carried by stagecoaches carry cancellations of the "Central Overland, California & Pike's Peak Express" and others.
