Postal tax stamps are sim-ilar to semipostals, except their use is mandatory instead of voluntary. They are used to show payment of a compulsory tax on mailing letters and parcels. The tax-es often go to a charitable institution or fund.

 


War Tax Stamps - Stamps used on mail during wars as a fund-raiser.
Water-activated Adhesive - Stamp gum that adheres when it is moistened.

Persian Rugs is the nickname given to the high value stamps in a series of documentary revenue stamps (tax stamps) issued in 1871. They are probably the most elaborate and colorful, and to many the most beautiful, US stamps ever produced.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing also overprinted Playing Card tax stamps in a similar manner to Bureau prints. Although not valid for any form of postage, these issues often form part of a Bureau precancel collection.
