Typography is, of course, the printing from types set by hand or machine, and is, in effect, identical to that described as "type-set" designing.

Typography - printing method done by pressure, the ink lines being impressed into the paper so that they appear raised on the back of the stamp. This is also referred to as 'letterpress' or 'relief' printing.

Typography is just the opposite of engraving. The ink is pressed into the paper, similar to a typewriter. With a 10 power magnifying glass you can see that the paper rises above the ink. The color seems below the surface of the paper.

Stamps printed by typography will bear some of the same characteristics as a typewritten page of text. That is, the plate is impressed into the paper, so the resulting stamp design is slightly sunk into the paper.

Printing - the four printing methods most commonly used for the production of postage stamps are: line-engraving (widely referred to as recess-printing); typography (letterpress); photogravure; and lithography.

Letterpress (also see typography) has been used to print overprints on U.S. stamps. It is also used in perfecting (back printing) inscriptions on the gum of many stamps, and to print most modern stamped envelopes.
