Underprint -- Words, symbols or other printing usually applied to the back of a stamp, usually as advertising. Underprinting also occurs on the front of a stamp, as with early French stamps.

 


Underprint: A fine printing underlying the design of a stamp, most often used to deter counterfeiting.

Underprint - Inscription on the back of a postage stamp, usually under the gum and in teh same ink as used to print the front.

Safety paper overprint: same as underprint, except printed on top of already printed stamps.

The gum.
The method of separation (perforation, rouletting).
Any overprints on the stamp.
Any security markings, underprints or perforated initials 'perfins'.
The study of philatelic fakes and forgeries.
