A chemical ingredient of film or paper developers that's often referred to as an activator and speeds up the developing agents. It's usally an alkali such as sodium carbonate, borax or sodium hydroxide.
Accelerator board: A printed circuit board added to a PC to increase its performance speeds. For example, if you have a Macintosh containing a Motorola 68000 CPU, you can purchase an accelerator board containing the faster 68030 CPU.

Alkali (accelerator):
i.e. Borax, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium hydroxide.

ACCELERATOR All developing agents (not developing solutions) are either neutral or slightly acid. Most developing agents must be in an alkaline state to be effective reducing agents, thus solutions require an alkali to activate the developing agent.
AcceleratorThe accelerator is added to the reducing agent to speed development. It also increases contrast. Excessive accelerator can result in chemical fog, excessive grain, soft emulsions, and short shelf life.
-Sodium hydroxide - highly active alkaline accelerator used in conjunction with hydroquinone to produce high contrast developers.
-Sodium metabisulfite - used as an acidifying agent in acid fixing baths.
