In summary, the acceptable circle of confusion on the negative depends on a number of factors, and it is better to determine the one which is best for you, rather than rely on the manufacturer's which is often not critical enough.

Depth of focus refers to the zone in front of and behind the focal plane in which the blurred image point is smaller than the acceptable circle of confusion.

The diameter of the circle increases with distance from the point of focus; the largest circle that is indistinguishable from a point is known as the acceptable circle of confusion, or informally, simply as the circle of confusion.

For certain critical work, the acceptable circle of confusion would be smaller than for other, less critical work. In other words, some people and some situations force greater demands on the sharpness of an image.
