He's a big fan of action photography, but whenever he sets his camera to continuous shooting mode, it only takes five pictures before it starts 'buffering.' What's going on here?

Thanks to advances in today's cameras, action photography is simple, if you remember these basic action photography tips.

All the basic rules of photography still apply to action photography. Rules such as leading lines, centring and rule of thirds should be kept in mind when composing the picture.

One secret to effective action photography in general is to get close enough to get the athlete's facial expression. Skiing and snowboarding photography is no different, even if the faces are more covered up than in other sports.

If you want to capture fast-moving subject matter so that it's tack sharp, you need to have a lot of light, whether it's natural (the sun) or artificial (strobe lighting).

Sports and Action photography is all about timing. Its about reacting. Its about being in the right place at the right time and its about execute. These are all qualities of the athlete and those of the photographer as well.

We all know action photography is exciting and very interesting if the pictures are taken well. However, action shots pose a great challenge, especially to novice photographers.

In sports or other action photography a rapid burst of shots is used to capture sequences where things are happening so quickly it's almost impossible to get just the one shot you want.

Remember, catching the moment in fast-paced action photography may take a little more practice so - hang in there.
7. Look at the Light
By this, I don't mean look into the sun; that won't do at all.

Shutter priority is useful for action photography, but I prefer aperture priority even when I'm shooting wildlife or sports. I'd rather select the f-stop that gives me the depth-of-field I want with fast enough shutter speed to freeze movement.

This is excellent for outdoor photography, but for low-light conditions or action photography (where fast shutterspeeds are needed), more sensitive or "fast" film is used which is more "grainy".

Use a digital camera for action photography, particularly where a little blur is desired.

I am sure someone is thinking, "I shoot sports or action photography. You can't use previsualization with these types of photography. The action happens too fast". Yes, you can.

This technique is most often used with action photography. It requires a burst of flash just before the end of a long exposure.

For high-speed or any kind of action photography, you may need to experiment yourself with how shutter speeds affect the motion in the photo.

Pre-focusing is used extensively in action photography when you know that you want to take the picture at a certain fixed spot.

Sports photography is one area where single lens reflex cameras have a distinct edge over point-and-shoot models, so if you're really interested in action photography, you should consider using an SLR.

Optical viewfinders which tend to be more comfortable and efficient, especially for action photography and in low-light conditions.

A number of weeks ago I wrote a tip on the portrait photography composition technique of Giving Your Subject Space to Look Into. A similar tip for action photography is to give moving subjects space to ‘move into'.

Sony bragged about the 10 FPS capture, but as a point and shoot and not an SLR, I doubt the DSC-HX1 can track focus which spraying away. I'd skip this for action photography; you want a Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XSi for the same price instead.

With action photography in this mode you will get some very artistic blurring, which is interesting, but probably not what you want.

This type of camera is helpful for news and action photography where several pictures must be taken in a short time from various ranges and under varying light conditions.

Of course, shooting Raw I could change the white balance in Nikon Capture or Adobe Photoshop, but if I had been shooting wildlife using JPEG--my preferred mode for action photography--I would have had to manually set the white balance in order to ...
