AE Lock
AE Lock is a camera setting that lets you lock your automatic exposure, so you keep the same combination of f-stop and shutter speed, when your camera is in one of semi- or full automatic exposure modes.

AE - Auto Exposure, a system for automatically setting the proper exposure according to the existing light conditions. There are three types of AE systems:
Programmed: where the camera picks the best shutter speed and aperture automatically; ...

Using AE-Lock
If your subject is off-centre and has a very bright or very dark background, metering from the whole frame may fail to provide the correct exposure. Your camera's Auto Exposure Lock (AE-L) facility can help here.

Canon AE-1 Program
I see a new Canon AE-1 Program for sale over eBay. I have friends who've bought from this seller who've loved what they've gotten, so good luck.

Program AE mode (P).

AE Lock
With this feature, your camera will remember the current exposure setting, so you can change the framing of your photo, and shoot with that exposure.

AE-lock: Another must have feature is AE-lock (Automatic Exposure Lock). In aperture priority and shutter priority as well as program modes, you can lock exposure and recompose your shot.

In Program AE mode, dial in a positive exposure compensation in +1/3EV steps. (For the above picture, we'll dial in +1/3EV.)
In Manual mode, dial in a slower shutter speed, while retaining the same aperture.

Tv: Time value. AE camera metering mode by which you choose shutter speed and the metering system sets aperture (also called shutter priority).

Zeiss lenses in the C/Y mount came in either AE or MM varieties. MM lenses were more recent, with a setting that allowed the camera to select the aperture as part of its autoexposure system, while the older AE lenses did not.

A manual mode I photograph in quite often is called Program AE. With Program AE you can choose the ISO you wish to photograph in and the digital camera then sets the shutter speed and aperture (exposure) automatically to suit.

Advanced cameras offer some kind of Auto Exposure Lock (aka AE Lock, Exposure Memory Lock or EV Lock).

I own a canon 1000D now. Earlier I had a canon AE 1 with 50mm 1.8 lens. My current lens is 18-55mm.. what is the difference between my AE 1 50mm and 1000D 55mm.. the latter is much more tele.

I normally use the flashgun in auto TTL mode with the camera in manual or aperture-priority AE.

Additionally, since flash metering occurs after your camera meters for ambient light, it is important not to use the auto exposure (AE) lock setting when using the focus and recompose technique.

Holding the release halfway maintains the focusing point and the exposure parameters (AE Lock), and allows for re-composition of the picture, if so desired by you. To take the picture, simply push down on shutter release all the way.

New features include a multifunction thumb lever for accessing Video Start/Stop and programmable AE Lock button, and control extensions moving all of the camera's controls within reach of the right and left handles.
