AF-I & AF-S lenses:
Nikon's series of AF lenses, involves the integration of coreless motors into their super telephoto lenses. This gives these lenses quick, ultra quiet autofocus operations.
Finally, there is my favorite feature of Nikon's AF-S lenses. Anyone who owns one of the new high-speed AF-S telephotos can tell you they are a joy to use. They lock on in an instant. But you'll be missing the boat if you leave it at that.
4 AF-S lens at f8 on both cameras. I upsized both to 16×24 inch and cropped out a small 4×6-inch section with fine details (4×6 is 1/16 of the entire 16×24 print). I showed those 4×6 prints to some friends.
Most AF Nikkors, except the AF-I and AF-S lenses, focus with a motor in the camera body.
8 AF-S lens, with the opening added. I have performed this procedure on a dozen or so lenses, and all the owners are quite happy. I have yet to see flare caused by stray light entering the opening, although it is possible.
AF-S: Autofocus Silent Focusing is driven by a "Silent Wave" motor in the lens instead of the focus drive motor in the camera. AF-S lenses focus faster than standard AF-NIKKORs and almost completely silently. Find out more.
