Concerning Large Format lenses: The maximum image area of usable quality which a certain lens can produce (the image circle). Known as the angle of coverage.

Generally speaking named for pictures which are at least twice as wide as high and which are suited for picture motivs with a really great angle of coverage (up to 360 ).

The primary concern is that the angle of coverage of the lens may not be the same because the size of the sensor is not necessarily the same as with 35mm film.

Manufacturers use the equivalent-to-35mm method to describe the actual angle of coverage of their lenses when used on digital cameras. Keep in mind that focal length is focal length regardless of the format.

Field of View: The field of view of a lens (sometimes called the angle of coverage or angle of view) is defined as the angle (in object space) over which objects are recorded on the film or sensor in a camera.

Depending on the focal length of your lens, the angle of coverage gets adjusted to light up the subject sufficiently.

In general, there is a trade off between the angle of coverage and the sharpness of the lens. Wide angle designs are not the sharpest lenses, but they are necessary for wide lenses to get enough coverage.

In previous Nikon flashes, the angle of coverage only corresponds to the angle of view for FX for each focal length. The SB-900 can cover either the FX or DX angle of view, thus conserving some flash power on DX DSLRs.

It can also be difficult to effectively shield the sides of the lens from stray light using a lens hood, since this hood cannot also block any of the image-forming light across the wide angle of coverage.

The narrower angle of coverage the longer lens will yield mimics the narrower coverage produced by the smaller sensor. Because of this, some people talk of this as being a "focal length multiplier" for digital.

The eye's high-resolution color vision system however has a much narrower angle of coverage and is concentrated around the eye's fovea, which could be compared to the central focal point of a camera lens.
